about

Nyepi Segara

Nyepi Segara is a maritime version of the Nyepi Day of Silence, mainly practiced on the three adjacent Balinese islands. On this day, all maritime activity ceases on Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan. This means there is no sailing to or from the islands, no boats between the islands, and no diving or snorkeling. Nor are other sea-related activities, such as swimming or walking on the beach.

This day aims to honor and appease Dewa Barun, the ruler of the seas and oceans. This ceremony began in the 17th century during the reign of Dalem Waturenggong in Klungkung County.

The ceremony on this day involves meditation and silent contemplation on the importance of the aquatic environment. Therefore, wearing a sarong covering the legs and a modest shirt or blouse covering the shoulders is appropriate.

Nyepi Segara is every year on the full moon of the fourth month (Purnama Kapat) of the Saka calendar.

Other names: Nyepi Laut
