Overview

Indonesia offers different visa options to foreign visitors depending on the purpose and length of stay. The most commonly used visa is the Visa On Arrival for citizens of selected countries, which allows a stay of up to 30 days and can be extended for an additional 30 days. Other options include the tourist 211A visa, which allows one entry into the country and a stay of up to 180 days. The Remote Worker visa for foreign nationals is the latest addition, especially for digital nomads, and allows a stay of up to one year with possible extension. This Guide provides an overview of the different types of visas available in Indonesia, including the requirements, application process, and prices for each visa.

This Guide is divided into the following sections:

AI Bali Guide

Visa types

Before entering Indonesia (Bali), you should be clear about how long you want to stay in Indonesia and for what purpose you are traveling. Based on this information, you can decide which visa you need to enter the country.

  • C - medium-term, single-entry visas

  • D - long-term, multi-entry visas

  • E - long-term, multi-entry, temporary residence permit (K/ITAS)

These visas can be used for tourism, government visits, business visits, shopping for goods, attending meetings, and transit (transfers).

Visas are for one entry into Indonesia. Once you leave Indonesia during their validity period, the visa expires, and you must purchase a new visa on your return.

The day of arrival and departure are always counted as a full day.

⚠️ Note: Visa On Arrival can only be extended once for 30 days, for a total of 60 days. After that, you MUST leave Indonesia. You cannot apply for another visa before it expires. Visa On Arrival Extension

Online

If you applied online, you can apply for an extension at the same address. Unfortunately, this option is unavailable if you bought your visa upon arrival at the airport.

After logging in to https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id/, click "Extend" in the top right and select the visas you wish to extend. Then pay for the extension itself, and you will receive an email confirmation of the issued visa.

In-person

You can apply for a Visa On Arrival extension in person at the Immigration Department.

You can choose from the following locations:

You will need three visits in total:

  1. For your first visit, you will need a completed application form, which you can get directly from the Immigration office, your passport and a photocopy of your passport (two pages with a photo and a Visa On Arrival visa stamp page), and a ticket out of Indonesia within the validity of your visa after the extension and make a payment of 500,000 IDR on the spot by cash or card.

  2. On the second visit, the officer will take your photo and fingerprints.

  3. On your third visit, you will collect your passport with your visa extension.

Please note that one visit can take from 15 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the workload of the immigration office.

The extension takes around two weeks, so start early to avoid a possible stay without a valid visa, which carries a fine of IDR 1,000,000 per day (approx. USD 67).

💡 Tip: You must not wear sandals or flip-flops and must cover your knees and shoulders when entering the immigration building. We, therefore, recommend a classic T-shirt and long trousers with sneakers. A sarong can be rented to cover your legs when entering the building.

There is an internet corner with two computers and a printer at the immigration office in Jimbaran, in case you need to print something for your application at the last minute. This service is provided free of charge.

Using a Visa Agency

You can use visa agencies to extend your visa. In this case, you must only go to immigration once for your photo and fingerprints. The agency will do the rest for you. They will collect your passport and money, send you a specific date to visit immigration, and then return your passport with an extended visa.

VOA visa extensions with agents range from IDR 800,000 for 14 days to IDR 1,500,000 for express processing within 5 to 7 days.

From our experience, we can recommend the Visa4Bali agency, which we have been using for several years, and everything has always been smooth (this is not a paid cooperation). :)

Tourist Visa (211A)

The "Tourist Single-Entry Visitor Visa" with the is for all citizens whose country is not on the Visa On Arrival list and for travelers wishing to stay in Bali or Indonesia generally for more than 60 days

This type of visa can only be arranged offshore if you are not in Indonesia, i.e., before traveling to Bali.

Once your visa expires (maximum 180 days), you must leave Indonesia and arrange a new visa if you plan to return to Indonesia and stay longer.

💡 Tip: Singapore or Malaysia is most often used for visa runs, where flights from Bali are relatively cheap. Through visa agencies, new 211A visas can be arranged in those locations in as little as one day.

211A Visas Can Be Obtained In the Following Ways

Online

At the official website https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id/ just choose your country, "General, Family or Social", then "Tourism, Family Visit, and Transit" and choose "Tourist Single Entry Visitor Visa - 60 Days"

Required documents for the application:

  • Photo of Passport valid for at least six months after entry into Indonesia.

  • A ticket out of Indonesia within the validity of your visa

  • A digital copy of the passport photo

These visas can be used for tourism, family care, humanitarian purposes, business meetings, government visits, trade visits, shopping for goods, attending meetings, transit (transfers), and non-commercial sporting activities sponsored by international sports organizations or the Indonesian government.

Visas are valid for 60 days and can be extended twice for a further 60 days, for a maximum of 180 days

The day of arrival and departure are always counted as a full day.

211A Visa Extension

⚠️ Note: Unfortunately, no official information is available regarding the possibility of extending the 211A tourist visa in person at the Immigration office, and we have no personal experience. We believe the procedure will be the same as for Visa On Arrival. However, we recommend using the services of a visa agency to extend your visa, which will save you a lot of time.

Online

We are currently wotrking on bringing you exact process how to extend your 211A Visa via official website https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id.

Using a Visa Agency

We recommend using the services of visa agencies to extend your visa. In this case, you must only visit the immigration department once for fingerprints and a photograph. The agency will do the rest for you. They will collect your passport and money, send you a specific date to visit immigration and bring your passport back with your extended visa.

Extension of 211A visas with agents for 60 days ranges from about IDR 2,600,000 (USD 176) for 14 days to IDR 3,500,000 (USD 240) for express processing in 4 to 5 days.

Visa D1 & D2

Visas D1 (tourism) and D2 (business) are a multi-entry visa, valid for one or more years, where a single stay in Indonesia cannot exceed 180 days.

It is, therefore, an interesting option for those who plan to return to Indonesia during the year, but at the same time, their stay will not exceed 180 days; alternatively, for travelers who are willing to take a trip outside Indonesia every 180 days, for example to Malaysia, Singapore, etc.

⚠️ Note: Visas can only be applied for offshore - before entering Indonesia.

Visas can be obtained via offical website evisa.imigrasi.go.id, where you can choose the desired lenght. But because you need to upload document " which explains the relationship with the applicant" - you, to obtain the visa, most often people choose to get visa through visa agencies.

D1 visa selection

D1 Visa selection

D2 visa selection

D2 Visa selection

The price of the visas via offical website: 1 year is IDR 3,000,000, 2 years is IDR 6,000,000 and 5 years is IDR 15,000,000.

Through visa agencies is the cost of visas from IDR 5,500,000 for 1 year, (approx. USD 350), IDR 8,500,000 for 2 years (approx. USD 540) and IDR 25,000,000 for 5 years (approx. USD 1,600) and takes seven working days to process.

Documents required for D1 or D2 visa application:

  • Passport valid for at least six months from entry into Indonesia

  • The required bank balance of USD 2,000

  • A return ticket or a ticket out of Indonesia as part of the first planned visit to Indonesia

  • A digital copy of your passport photo

  • Information, invitations, or correspondence from government agencies or private institutions that explain the relationship with the applicant or statement letter from the spouse or parents explaining the family relationship with the applicant and the activities to be carried out in Indonesia, attached with a family card or similar document - this one will usually handle visa agency for you.

  • In addition to the visa, you must meet other requirements for entry into Indonesia. See the Travel Regulations Guide for more information.

Each 60-day stay extension (a maximum of two extensions for a total 180-day stay) costs approximately IDR 2,600,000 and takes 2-5 days to process via visa agencies.

Unfortunately, no official information is available about the possibility of extending the visa beyond one/two/five years. Of course, arranging a new visa after their initial period (again offshore) is possible.

KITAS Visa

The (K)ITAS visa (Kartu Izin Tinggal Sementara = literally "temporary residence permit card") is the name of several visas that fall under this category. It used to be a physical card issued, but now it is just an electronic document, so the letter 'K' has been dropped from the name.

Temporary residence can be granted to:

  • Foreign workers, investors, scientists, students, family members of an Indonesian citizen, e.g., children, spouse, former Indonesian citizens, retired people (retirement KITAS B319 - B319 visas are no longer available - Silver Hair E33E visas have replaced them), and others...

⚠️  Note: Majority of KITAS Visa do not entitles you to work in Indonesia. You must have a special working Kitas Visa, which already includes work permit.

K/ITAS visas are valid for six months to 10 years, depending on the type, and are multi-entry, i.e., you can leave Indonesia and return. Regarding leaving Indonesia with KITAS, mentioning the EPO and ERP permits is still essential.

EPO - Exit Permit Only

An EPO is a document you need to get if your KITAS expires and you do not want to renew it, or if you are planning to leave Indonesia and do not intend to return, or if you are changing your visa type to a different one, e.g., from an investor to student, etc. This is an official action where you are removed from the system for that visa. An EPO through a visa agency costs about IDR 1,000,000 (USD 67). Once you get it, you have seven days to travel out of Indonesia. If you do not have an EPO and leave Indonesia without one, you may have a problem with your next entry, where the immigration officer may not allow you to enter the country after learning this.

ERP - Exit Re-entry Permit

Foreigners outside Indonesia will use the ERP with valid KITAS visas but want to return to Indonesia on the same visa but under a different sponsor. The latter must then apply for an ERP, based on which they will let you into Indonesia. In most cases, this will only apply to people legally working in Indonesia, not long-term tourists who enjoy the benefits of a visa without a work permit.

How to Apply for a KITAS Visa

Generally, KITAS is usually applied for by a sponsor or an Indonesian sponsor who handles the paperwork for you (e.g., your employer). For tourists who want to use KITAS for a long-term stay without a work permit, we recommend using the services of a visa agency and choosing from the listings available from reputable agencies on the web.

If you have all the required documents, you can also apply for selected KITAS visas yourself via the official website, https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id.

Usually, when applying for a visa through an agency, you only need a photo of the passport and the passport itself or an electronic ID photo.

Advantages of KITAS Visas

K/ITAS visas entitle the holder to various discounts at many places. For example, tickets to amusement parks are often up to 30 % cheaper. Some restaurants in Bali also offer discounts for K/ITAS holders, and healthcare is significantly more affordable with K/ITAS. Medical procedures are, in our experience, cheaper for holders by about 20 to 40 %.

Another attractive advantage is the possibility to extend KITAS indefinitely and, after five years, apply for KITAP - a permanent residence permit, which is valid for five years and can also be extended indefinitely.

One of the main advantages crucial for many tourists is the possibility of leaving Indonesia on a visa and returning with the same visa without additional costs.

Another advantage is the possibility of buying a scooter or a car with your name with KITAS and and getting a local driver's license.

SKTT and KTP-OA ID Cards

Under current Indonesian law, it is mandatory for K/ITAS and K/ITAP visa holders to get an Indonesian identity card issued by the Civil Registry Office, Dinas Kependudukan dan Catatan Sipil

💡 Tip: SKTT and KTP-OA are now also issued electronically as PDF only, so you don't need to get a physical ID card.

SKTT
SKTT ID Card, Indonesia, Bali, Kitas Visa

SKTT ID Card

For KITAS visa holders, this is the so-called SKTT or Surat Keterangan Tempat Tinggal, the Residency Certificate

For KITAP visa holders, it is the KTP-OA or Karta Tanda Penduduk - Orang Asing, the Foreigner's Identity Card

Under Indonesian law, you must apply for an SKTT or KTP-OA within 14 days of being granted a KITAS or KITAP visa. The application should be made under your Civil Registry Office, according to your address on the visa. There is always one office for the whole regency; you can find a map of them below.

Can't you see the map? Google can be stubborn. Try this link.

⚠️ Note: Awareness of these compulsory ID cards is very low, and many tourists who hold KITAS or KITAP often have not the slightest idea about them and are then surprised when they are required of them, for example when renewing their visa, thus exposing themselves to an unnecessary fine.

How to Arrange the ID Cards

You can arrange your ID in person by delivering all the necessary documents to the relevant Civil Registry Office (see map). Depending on the area, the fee is usually up to IDR 250,000 (approx. USD 16).

Alternatively, you can contact visa agencies that will help you to process the SKTT or KTP-OA virtually without any effort for about IDR 1,000,000 (approx. USD 65)

What is Required for the Issuance of the ID Card?

The requirements for the ID card may vary depending on the region you fall under. We recommend checking them in person or online to avoid unnecessary trips to the office.

  • Passport and copy

  • KITAS/KITAP and copies

  • 2-3x Passport photo

  • Surat Tanda Melapor Police Report - letter to report residence*.

  • Residence Certificate from the village where you live called Surat Domisili**

  • Sponsor's National Identity Card (KTP) and a copy of it***

  • Sponsor's family ID card (Karta Keluarga)***

* to be processed at the local police station and can be arranged for you by the owner of the property/accommodation where you have a reported address (fee approx. IDR 50,000)
** this is done at the local municipal office and can be arranged by the owner of the property/apartment where you have a registered address (fee up to IDR 500,000)
*** you can again use the owner of the property/accommodation where you have a registered address

The validity of these issued cards always duplicates the validity of your KITAS/KITAP visa.

The ID is usually issued within one day. However, it may take up to three days

You are required to report any change of details to the office within 14 days of the change. Changes relate, for example, to address, marital status, etc.

Fines for not Holding an SKTT or KTP-OA

  • If the foreigner does not possess the card at all, they face the possibility of a fine of up to IDR 2,000,000 (USD 129)

  • Failure to report changes within 14 days exposes the foreigner to a fine of up to IDR 1,000,000 (USD 65)

  • If the foreigner fails to present their identity card upon request of the authorized person, the penalty is IDR 100,000

Remote Worker Visa E33G

A dedicated visa for digital nomads in Bali was one of the most anticipated visa types, as Bali is one of the best destinations for digital nomads and remote workers. It was made available at the beginning of 2024 with a new visa policy and recent changes.

Visas are available for everyone who earns at least USD 60,000 per year and has a contract with a company outside Indonesia. Unfortunately, it is currently unknown how to self-apply for a visa as a freelancer with no fixed contract.

⚠️ Note: Visas can be applied both from abroad and from Indonesia (offshore and onshore). However, onshore can only be applied if you do not have a (e)VOA or 211A tourist visa.

Visas can be obtained via the official website evisa.imigrasi.go.id, or you can get them via visa agencies.

Digital Nomad Visa E33G Bali

E33G Visa selection for digital nomads

The price of the visas via offical website: 1 year is USD 150 + IDR 2,700,000

Through visa agencies is the cost of visas starts from USD 150 + IDR 8,000,000 for 1 year and takes around seven working days to process.

⚠️ Warning: Some visa agencies currently offer NO benefits to obtaining a visa through them. You still need to deliver the same documents requested via the official website. So, we honestly don't understand why they charge around 300% of the visa price. On the other hand, some agencies can get you a visa without proof of income and employment contract - where the extra agency fee makes sense.

Documents required for E33G Remote Worker visa application:

  • Passport valid for at least six months from entry into Indonesia

  • The required bank balance of USD 2,000

  • Bank account that proves income in the form of salary or income worth at least USD 60,000 per year

  • A digital copy of your passport photo

  • Employment contract with a company established outside the country of Indonesia

  • In addition to the visa, you must meet other requirements for entry into Indonesia. See the Travel Regulations Guide for more information.

After one year, the visa can be extended onshore. Unfortunately, no official information about the number of possible extensions is available yet.

These new visas are designed to attract foreigners; corporate and individual investors to invest in Indonesia and to help accelerate the country's economic development. Upon arrival in Indonesia with an approved visa, the 90-day period to make your intended investment will begin.

We have yet to get information from visa agencies on whether visas in this category can be obtained through their services. We are currently researching information for you.

Selected golden visas can also be obtained via visa agencies. This usually costs more, but it can make the process easier and faster, with fewer documents needed to get a desired visa. We always recommend checking the current offers of the agencies.

Best Visa for Long-term Stay

The most common visas for tourists to live in Bali are the 211A toursit visa (for a maximum of 180 days) and the KITAS Remote Worker E33G visa (for 1 year).

Comparison of 211A and E33G visas for long-term residence in Bali (1 year):

In the case of 211A, the cost for one year:

  • visa is IDR 1,500,000 + 2x extensions via agency total IDR 5,200,000, i.e., for half a year IDR 6,700,000, you have to buy this for one year two times, i.e., total IDR 13,400,000, assuming that the price of the visa or the cost of its extension does not increase. Plus you have to add a cost of a "visa run" (air tickets and potentially a hotel) to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, for example, every six months. And you have to invest time: each extension requires a visit to the immigration department for fingerprints and a photograph.

Total IDR 13,400,000 / 12 months = IDR 1,166,666 / month (approx. USD 75)

In the case of KITAS E33G, the cost for one year: visa is USD 150 + IDR 2,700,000. (total IDR 5,070,000)

Total IDR 5,070,000 / 12 months = IDR 420,000 / month* (approx. USD 27) + you get all the benefits of a KITAS visa and certainty. Plus, you save time with repeated trips to the immigration department.

* If you apply for the visa yourself. You must expect a higher price if you apply through an agency.

________________

Just for the complexity: a D1 or D2 visa costs IDR 5,500,000 for one year + four extensions, each IDR 2,600,000, for a total of IDR 15,900,000 / 12 months = IDR 1,325,000 / month (approx. USD 84). And you still must do a "visa run" after 180 days.

Visa Agency Recommendation

For our long-term stay in Bali, we use Visa4Bali agency, and we can recommend their services. Everything is done as agreed, and in the first place, we have always received our purchased visas. When we used the B211A visa, we also kept our passports with the agency for over a year, and then they were returned to us without any problems. They even notified us of the expiring passport themselves and arranged the visa transfer to a new passport free of charge.

visa exemption countries

Only ten countries have visa-free travel with Indonesia. Visas are granted free of charge directly on entry to Indonesia and are valid for 30 days without the possibility of extension. Citizens of these countries do not have the option of arranging other onshore visas while in the country.

These visas can be used for tourism, government visits, business meetings, appointments, purchases of goods, and transit.

To obtain a visa, citizens must present a valid passport at least six months after entering the country and a ticket out of Indonesia. They must also meet all other entry requirements in the Travel Regulations Guide

List of countries with which Indonesia has visa-free travel:

1. Brunei

2. Philippines

  • What is the AI Bali Guide?
AI Bali Guide is an AI-powered Bali travel guide that we have trained based on exclusive Guides we have created with up-to-date data. This way, you can save time searching for information in our Guides and reading long texts. Ask a specific question about something you're interested in from our individual Guides, and you'll get an answer in seconds.
  • Who are you?
We are a team of Bali-based expats who love to help others easily explore this beautiful island of Gods, enjoy its beauty, and help to understand more about its people, culture, and nature. You can read more about us here.
  • Why do I need to pay to read info at BaliGuide.me website?
As you would buy any travel guide like Lonely Planet, our BaliGuide.me is not any different. Thanks to the membership plan we can offer authentic and unique information that isn't influenced by paid cooperations or ads. All Guides are written by us, and we created all the features (itineraries, checklists, trained AI, etc.). We verify the information with the official institutions and keep it updated. Our entire team is long-term living in Bali and actively manages all the info provided to keep it up to date for all travelers. We can provide a much broader scale of information than someone who spent only a few weeks on holiday here (in Bali). Also, we are trying to provide ALL info you need for your holiday or long-term stay here in Bali, so you don't need to buy any other guide or read expensive non-actualized e-books. We invested hundreds of hours and went through thousands of pages of materials during the creation of BaliGuide.me to research everything. We have added our knowledge and our recommendations. So you don't have to spend so much time before your trip. Also, you don't need to pay if you want to read only our Blog. It is free for everyone, and we also provide several FREE Guides.

  • What is the benefit of purchasing your Guide over any printed one?
BaliGuide.me is always up to date. How often can the printed guide be updated? Once a year, if lucky. One year in Bali is like ten years in Europe or USA :) So much is changing and happening here that yearly updates are not enough. We are living here, and we can personally visit any Bali place in a matter of few hours and check actual data for you and update it on our website in minutes.

  • Is the membership fee recurring or a one-time payment?
All our plans are one-time payments with access valid from four weeks to six months based on the selected plan.

You will lose access to all the Guides when your current payment period ends. There is no need to cancel your membership during it's validity.
  • How do I access the content and services included in the membership plan?
After your payment is processed, you will sign in at BaliGuide.me and get instant access to all Guides that are part of your chosen membership plan. Same with Members Chat which can be found at https://baliguide.me/chat.
  • Is there a discount for a long-term membership?
However, we appreciate all long-term members and your support; we don't offer any discounts. We believe our service is priced at the right level for our content. We appreciate your understanding.
  • Can I share my membership with others?
Unfortunately, sharing your account details with others is not allowed. Please read our Terms of Service to understand better what is and is not permitted.
  • I bought Basic Plan but I can't access Member and AI Chat.
Member Chat and AI Bali Guide are features available only to our Premium Members. You can use our contact form instead.
