Transport in Bali

Last update: 14/01/2024 22:05

overview

Compared to developed countries, Bali only offers a few public transport alternatives. You won't find underground railways, trams, or trains. The only land-based option remains the classic road transport. Buses are a popular choice for those primarily looking for a cheap but relatively comfortable mode of transportation. In addition, public ferries can be used to move between the islands in Bali. This Guide focuses on what public transport in Bali is and how much it costs.

This Guide is divided into the following sections:

Buses

• Trans Sarbagita

Buses are Bali's most widely used form of public transport and the only land-based transport operated directly by the Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Indonesia. In addition to the state-owned carrier, there are also several private bus providers that you can use for your travels around the island. Of course, you can also use countless individual drivers and microcarriers, whose services you will encounter in almost every tourist spot.

Trans Sarbagita

Trans Sarbagita buses have been operated by the Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Indonesia since 2011. Currently, two routes out of the planned 17 are in operation. Two more routes have already been opened but have been canceled again due to low interest. Residents are primarily uncomfortable with the less frequent services with low service variability and reliability and thus still prefer personal transport by their cars or scooters.

However, according to the company's website, it also offers transport from Canggu and Kintamani.

Prices of selected connections to give you an idea:

Ships

In addition to the bus service within the island, you can also take advantage of the public ships service that will help you with transportation to the nearby islands of Nusa Penida, Java, and Lombok.

Public ships are usually the slowest connections but can transport your scooter or car between islands. This is often the reason why tourists use public ferries. In addition, it is the cheapest form of boat transportation. Ferries can also go in bad weather when faster and smaller private boats cannot go out to sea because of the big waves.

⚠️ Warning: With ferries, the port in Padang Bai (or even the ports in Lombok and Java) may be full, and the boat will wait several hours to disembark. We have personal experience where the journey from Nusa Penida port took 11 hours instead of 1 hour. So definitely don't use the ferry crossings if you are in a hurry to get to the airport, for example. Always leave an extra day or so.

Padang Bai harbor, Bali

Padang Bai harbor

• Bali ↔️ Nusa Penida
Bali ↔️ Nusa Penida

The ferry from Bali to Nusa Penida sails from Padang Bai port, east of the island, and arrives at Roro port northeast of Nusa Penida. The journey usually takes about 1 hour.

Departure times:

Bali -> Nusa Penida: 9:00, 14:00 (Wednesday and Sunday only 9:00)

Nusa Penida -> Bali: 8:00, 12:00 (Wednesday and Sunday only 8:00)

Departure times are approximate. Often the ferry departs an hour (or more) later, and unfortunately, for various reasons, it happens that the ferry does not run at all on a particular day, for example, due to a breakdown. For instance, in October 2022, the ferry was shut down for repairs, and the service did not operate for over a month.

Please have your international driving license and at least a copy of the vehicle documents ready for transport. If you don't have either, the police officer will probably politely ask you for a "bribe." ;-)

Tickets for the cruise cannot be purchased at the harbor since 29 August 2023 and must be purchased in advance online at trip.ferizy.com.

Ferry price:

  • Adult: IDR 31,700 (USD 2.1)

• Bali ↔️ Lombok
Bali ↔️ Lombok

The ferry from Bali to Lombok also runs from Padang Bai port to Lembar port (West Lombok) and back.

The ferry runs non-stop and departs approximately every 60 to 90 minutes. The journey usually takes 4 hours. During bad weather conditions, the journey can extend to 6 hours.

Please have your international driving license and the original documents for the vehicle ready. If you have a rental vehicle, please inform the rental company in advance that you intend to travel with the vehicle outside Bali. Many rental companies do not allow this. If they do, they must provide you with the original documents. Many people have driven off with the vehicle without the original for a small fee. However, we do not recommend relying on this. It depends on who you encounter; a strict worker may not let you on the boat.
