Overview

The geothermal volcanic hot springs are lesser-known attractions in Bali that we recommend visiting. The relatively common hot springs are scattered across Bali and are a great way to unwind after a long day exploring the island or relax a tired body after a strenuous climb up a volcano.

Whether you're a solo traveler, a couple on a romantic trip, or a family looking for a fun activity, Bali's hot springs are worth a visit. In this Guide, we'll explore the benefits and risks of the hot springs found in Bali and show you a map of the best ones to visit. Get ready to soak in the warm, healing waters of the hot springs.

This Guide is divided into the following sections:

General Info

The hot springs are made up of water that is naturally heated underground. This is due to the geothermal energy formed in the Earth's mantle. Hot springs can be created in two main ways. In areas of high volcanic activity, molten rock or magma may be present near the surface of the Earth's crust. The heat from this magma warms the surrounding groundwater, which then rises to the surface to form a hot spring. However, even in areas without volcanic activity, the temperature of the rocks in the Earth's crust increases with depth. This phenomenon is called a geothermal gradient. If water gets deep enough into the Earth's crust, it will warm up when in contact with the hot rocks. This process usually occurs along faults where faulted rocks allow water to circulate to greater depths.

Hot springs often contain a high concentration of minerals because heated water can dissolve more substances than cold water. These minerals can include calcium, lithium, and even radium. The chemical composition of hot springs can vary widely and can be classified as alkaline chloride, acid sulfate, bicarbonate, or iron-rich.

Benefits of Hot Springs

Bathing in hot springs is a popular relaxing activity, and many people believe it has many health benefits. Here are some of the possible benefits of bathing in hot springs:

Improving blood circulation: Bathing in hot springs can improve blood circulation, which can help bring more oxygen and nutrients to the body's tissues. This can promote healing and reduce inflammation.

Stress reduction: Many people find that soaking in hot springs helps them to relax and reduce stress. The warm water and soothing environment can help relax the mind and body.

Pain relief: Heat from hot springs can reduce muscle tension and relieve pain. This can be especially beneficial for people with arthritis, fibromyalgia, or back pain.

Skin health: Some people believe the minerals in hot springs can benefit the skin. Sulfur, for example, is believed to help treat acne and psoriasis.

Improving sleep: Taking a hot spring bath can help you sleep better. The relaxing effects of hot springs can enhance sleep quality, and the water's warmth can also help relax muscles.

Detoxification: The high temperature of hot springs can cause sweating, which can help eliminate toxins from the body. In addition, some minerals in hot springs can help support the body's natural detoxification processes.

Boosting immunity: Some believe a hot spring bath can help boost the immune system. The minerals in hot springs can support the body's natural defenses against illness and disease.

The health of the respiratory system: Bathing in hot springs can help improve respiratory health by opening the airways and reducing inflammation in the lungs.

Mental health: Hot springs have stress-reducing effects that can benefit mental health. Bathing in hot springs can help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.

How Long to Bathe

Bathing in hot springs should take less time, depending on the air and water temperature. Especially in warm weather, staying in hot water can lead to rapid dehydration. To bathe safely, limit your time in hot springs to 10 to 15 minutes, allow your body to cool down before soaking again, and drink water to regulate your body temperature better. We also recommend avoiding alcohol before bathing.

💡 Tip: We recommend a black or older swimsuit that you won't be sorry to have destroyed for hot springs. The presence of sulfites in the water will stain white and light-colored swimsuits yellow, and the marks are more or less unwashable.

Risks of Hot Springs

Bathing in hot springs can be a relaxing and therapeutic experience, but there are also some dangers associated with this activity. Here are some possible risks to consider:

Burns: Hot springs can reach very high temperatures, and if you stay in the water too long, you can get burns on your body. It is, therefore, essential to test the water temperature before entering the hot springs, and it is a good idea to be careful at all times.

Infection: Geothermal springs can be a breeding ground for bacteria; if you have an open wound, you may be at risk of infection. It's essential to avoid getting water in your eyes, nose, or mouth, and once you get out of the water, it's vital to take a shower.

Dehydration: Due to the high temperatures and minerals in the water, hot springs can cause dehydration. Drinking plenty of water and avoiding bathing for too long is essential.

The action of chemicals: As mentioned here, springs can contain high levels of minerals such as sulfur, magnesium, and calcium. Prolonged exposure to these ingredients can irritate the skin and eyes and, in some cases, lead to allergic reactions or chemical burns.

The risks of bathing in hot springs are relatively low, but it is important to be aware of them and take the necessary precautions. This is the only way to have a safe and enjoyable experience in this relaxing activity.

The map below shows the best geothermal springs in Bali. Among the most popular are Toya Devasya and Batur Natural Hot Spring, located directly under the Batur volcano at Lake Batur in the Kintamani area.

Another favorite is the thermal springs at the foot of the Batukaru volcano Air Panas Penatahan, which not only has several thermal pools, but also a larger pool with plain cool water and, last but not least, a great natural thermal lake right by the river where you can cool off.
